Cobourg Alive for Lights-on

Cobourg kicked off the Christmas season on Friday by turning on 130,000 lights in Rotary Park and along the waterfront. Afterwards, there was a party on King Street with live music, vendors and Santa. Starting at 6:30 with a ceremony in front of Victoria Hall, a large crowd then moved to the waterfront and with a countdown, the lights were turned on at 7:00pm. To the surprise of many (including me), there was a short fireworks display to mark the occasion. Soon after there was a live band on King Street, horse drawn wagon rides through the display and a few vendors on Second Street – although they were not there earlier. See the photos below. The DBIA also produced a good 5 minute video and put it on their facebook page. I copied it onto my You-Tube account and it’s shown below.  It does a good job of capturing the atmosphere on King Street.

And here’s another one on Global TV/Chex News – it starts with a commercial – sorry about that.

“wally cornbread two cents frenchy get a life all you guys ever do is complain…”

Wally \keeler is a “guy.” You don’t know diddly about whether cornbread, two cents or frenchy are guys. In any event, I have certainly made my complaints, but I will point out in my favour that, unlike the pseudonyms, I have effected positive change for Cobourg.

For ONE example. I lobbied to have the decrepit D”Arcy Street railway crossing accessible and safe for users requiring mobility scooters to get to the Cobourg Community Centre. I recall being hounded and mocked by some commentators (Manfred Schumann for one) for stepping up to get this done.

Earlier this year, a crumbling sidewalk immediately on the north side of the tracks was replaced. Most recently, a smooth path was installed between the tracks. The next step is the paving of the west shoulder this coming spring. The deed will be done.

So I complained to Town Council to expedite a solution. On this thread, I linked a suggestion that could make a splendid exhibition of lights even better. Shame on me for thinking something could be improved.

Btw, Robert, what example can you point out wherein your intervention improved the Town in some major or minor manner? Inquiring pseudonyms want to know.

Had a quick drive through last night, very impressive. Seems like more lights and better display than last year. Great work!

And after the lights were lit along the waterfront cars streamed along Queen Street passing Victoria Park which after many years has not even one Christmas light….they are missed by many…

So that’s what all the early-evening fireworks were about the other night then. Now I know. At the time I was going like “…what the blazes…?”

Here is an example sponsored by the Rotary Club of Richmond Centre, WI, USA. It has 9600 pixels and is programmed to music. https://youtu.be/YLiM967OPtU. Quite a spectacle compared to the 130,000 pixels for Cobourg’s Christmas Magic.

Correction noted but irrelevant to the case that Cobourg is mediocre in terms of spectacle and display. The Town needs a major infusion of imagination, something that is sadly lacking.

Who gets to pay the new and more expensive “Light” bill. Perhaps the Holdco executive bonus is on the counter.

If the switch was made to LED’s, they are probably saving dough. If there was an extra expense this year it wouldn’t come out of bonuses but rather the Holdco Slush Fund.
Bottomless.
