Beach Courtyard Summer Series

The Northumberland Local Food for Local Good (LFFLG) not for profit group organizes events that promote local, sustainable food.  Best known for their Cultivate Festival in Port Hope in September, this summer they are partnering with the Market and Smor couple, Lucas Cleveland and Montana Desjardins who operate Cobourg’s beach canteen. Starting on the weekend of July 13, 14, 15, they will turn the “courtyard” next door to the canteen into a “licensed cantina”.   Scheduled for four weekends, it will feature entertainment, local brews and wines plus food prepared by the Canteen. The event is being organized by Local Food for Local Good who will be managing drink sales while Market and Smor (aka the beach canteen) are supplying and selling the food. Drink sales will be used to cover all events’ costs and net proceeds will be shared 50/50 between the Town and LFFLG.

The Town’s share will “help support the maintenance and improvement of the waterfront” while LFFLG’s share will go to their “Community Food Fund, which will support food literacy workshops, community gardens and meal programs”. The Town will also get their usual cut from the canteen (50% of profit when it’s more than $20,000 per year).

Details

The Courtyard layout is shown in the plan at right.  Security guards will limit access to people aged 19 and older after 7:00pm.  There’s no word yet on who will provide entertainment.

  • August 3, 4, 5 – Sidewalk Sale and Sandcastle Festival
  • Saturday August 25 – Movie in the Park – sound from the movie might interfere with the entertainment and vice versa.

Council approved these events at their meeting tonight (Monday June 11, 2018). (Download agenda item here). If this is successful, similar events are expected to be put on next year.

Summer student jobs. No one knows how to create summer student jobs on this blog, not even the CTA, especially the CTA. They do know how to kill summer student jobs and lobby actively to do so.

This summer series will be a lot of fun and reminds many of the Saturday Night Dances at The Pav, put on by the one and only Louis Stover, member of the Downshifters and the College Street Soap Box Derby. Hopefully this will develop into a weekly blast, loud rock and roll and getting down, throwing pretty girls into the lake. party party.

This young couple are to be commended for their hard work and intent on bringing good healthy food to the beach. They are always cheerful and welcoming. This is such an innovative idea for our beach front. Thank you Montana and Lucas and Good Luck.

Wow, more revenue for the Town from Victoria Park enterprises. Love it when tourists spend their money to Cobourg’s monetary benefit. More money, money money.

Does anybody know how much our Town received from this deal last year?

Since you are too lazy with a bloated sense of entitlement to find out for yourself, I thought I’d spoon feed you. No need for your thanks. https://www.cobourg.ca/en/resourcesGeneral/2018-Budget/Media—2018-Budget-Operating.pdf

$17,490.00

Eastender taught me a new word:

Something like your bloated $17,490.00 fact(?) here.

The number quoted below by Wally is what was budgeted for in 2017 and 2018. According to the 2018 budget documents, the 2017 actual was only $4,867.

Enough to pay a summer student towards their tuition. Good.

Enough to turn you into an exaggerator. Bad.

Hi Wally, I’m really not that lazy and I figured if someone else already has the (hopefully correct) answer, why repeat all that research. Can’t we share? I also don’t have a bloated sense of entitlement.
Why would you say that is enough money to pay a student’s tuition? That money goes to the town, no?
Is my math right by figuring that the canteen made $29,734.00 in profit for 2017 and we get 50% of the $9,734.00?

Wait! My arithmetic was OK but my reasoning was wrong. Weren’t we guaranteed $20,000.00 per year from this deal? What’s up with the $4,867.00 chump change? And why the forecast of $17,490.00 for this and next year instead of 20 grand?

So security guards will keep out toddlers after 7:00 pm.
You can’t be too careful, no?
