Big Success for Habitat – Fund-raising Goal Exceeded

On November 22, Habitat for Humanity Northumberland launched a campaign to raise $20,000 to build local affordable homes in Northumberland County.  Since it’s their 20th anniversary, they set the goal to raise $20K for their 20th in 20 days, ending on December 11th.  They announced yesterday that this campaign had raised $35,000 – easily beating their goal.  As well as their lead sponsor (Spoolon) who made a significant contribution, they had 10 “day sponsors” who contributed $1000 each and 3 “half day sponsors” who contributed $500 each.  There was also a raffle held in conjunction with the Gingerbread Festival which raised $700 and of course a number of people donated to make the campaign a big success.  This included the children at Notre Dame School in Cobourg who raised $300 at a bake sale.

On top of that and separate to the campaign, Rotary Cobourg donated $20,000 “to celebrate 20 years in the community” bringing the total for the 20 days to $55,000.

Executive Director Meaghan Macdonald (on right in photo) said that there are more people than ever struggling to find homes – either to own or rent.  The others in the photo are representatives of sponsors plus Linda Kay (at left) who contributed many hours volunteering on the project.

With a goal of five new homes per year for the next five years, Habitat for Humanity builds new homes to qualifying people in need.  There is no down-payment and they get interest-free mortgages with mortgage payments set at 25% of gross income.  They must contribute a minimum of 500 hours of “sweat equity” into building their own home or providing other assistance to Habitat for Humanity.

Since 1998 Habitat Northumberland has mobilized the community to help 56 families achieve affordable homeownership and 23 families maintain affordable homeownership.

The announcement was held at Re-Store which provides funds to run the organization.  A cake was made for the event and then distributed to everyone at the event including Re-Store customers! Notably, all the incoming Cobourg Councillors made donations although there were none at the announcement.

Some years ago, I spent a winter tearing down and rebuilding a home on Alexandria Drive for Habitat with fellow members of the Cobourg Rotary Club.
Great fun and I learned some building skills, although they would only let me drywall in closets.
A great opportunity for volunteering with a difference.
Go Habitat Go!
