Cobourg Hosting Election Info meeting

On April 24 at 7:00pm, Cobourg will be hosting an information meeting for anyone in Northumberland thinking of running in the Council elections in October. Not just Cobourg but Northumberland. It will be held in the Old Bailey Courtroom and if you want to go, you need to RSVP to Municipal Clerk Brent Larmer by emailing [email protected] or by calling 905-372-4301 x 4401.  There will be Ministry of Municipal Affairs representatives available to answer questions and they will make a presentation on what to expect if you are elected to Council.  Nominations will be accepted from May 1 through July 27 – that’s right, exactly when the Provincial election campaigning and voting will happen.

In January 2017, Councillor Larry Sherwin resigned and there was a call for applications for the position.

Eleven people submitted their names and made presentations to Council and since these people expressed interest in being a councillor just over a year ago, it’s likely that several of them are still interested.  The summaries of their presentations are worth reading again – go here.  In the end, Susanne Séguin was selected but the competition will open once again with the Election on 22nd October.

Only one current councillor has said she will not be running – Debra McCarthy. The others have not made their intentions public although Forrest has hinted he won’t run again.

There is already one All-Candidates meeting organized – the Cobourg Taxpayers Association has booked the Best Western on October 10.

Information about both elections is available at these pages on Cobourg Internet:

These pages will have all you need to know about these elections.

This should be an interesting election!
Cobourg Taxpayers Association director Ken Strauss fired the opening salvo already last November.
“Replacing our politicians and town staff who ignore Cobourg citizens who pay their salaries would be a huge step in the right direction.”
Tallyho!
