Cobourg Police Weekly report

Every week, Police issue a Press Release giving a count of what they have responded to in the week and some examples of what they have done.  Typically, there’s not much happening – no murders, armed holdups, drug raids etc but I suppose we should be pleased to live in a Town where the crime rate is low, at least for major crimes.  This week saw a training exercise where Police simulated a situation at the Hospital, apparently imagining a deranged person with a gun.  Pete Fisher reported on the exercise – see link below.  The weekly report by S/Sgt Brent Allison did not mention that but said that between the 13th and 19th of August, Cobourg police responded to 248 occurrences.

The full Police report can be downloaded from the links below but the top calls to Police were for Community Service (53), Police Assistance (23), Property Related (15), Alarm (12), Theft (11), Police Information (10), Suspicious Person (9).  Although the report says that the “Cobourg Police Service responded to 248 occurrences” only 190 were categorized.

Below are some typical “examples” of Police action:

Tuesday, August 14, 2018: Police responded to an east end business at approximately 1:30 pm in regard to a complaint of ongoing mischief.  Police investigation revealed that over the past five business days nails and screws appeared to have been thrown onto the roadway at the entrance of the business parking lot.  No suspects identified at this time.

Wednesday, August 15, 2018.  Police responded to the Cobourg Marina at approximately 01:30am, after receiving a report of mischief involving a motor vehicle in the area. Upon arrival Police observed a motor vehicle, which had been covered in toilet paper by unknown parties.  No suspects identified at this time.

Friday, August 17, 2018 Police conducted traffic enforcement in the West end of Cobourg. As a result of the initiative 12 Provincial Offences Notices were issued under the Highway Traffic Act.  [No other “traffic enforcement” was reported for the week.]
At approximately 3:30pm Police investigated after a resident in the Town of Cobourg had received a counterfeit $10.00 bill. The bill was turned over to the Cobourg Police Service for ongoing investigation.

Sunday, August 19, 2018 At 00:05hrs Police responded to a west end neighborhood after receiving a complaint of loud music in the area. Police attended and subsequently located a large house party in the neighborhood.  Police spoke with the homeowner who terminated the party without incident.
At 9:30am Police responded to a residential neighborhood in the downtown core, after receiving a report of graffiti observed in the area. Police investigation revealed that multiple locations had been spray painted over night. Investigation continues.

Subsequent to the weekly report,  S/Sgt Allison reported that on “Sunday the 19th of August, 2018, at approximately 11:36pm, officers from the Cobourg Police Service responded to a business in the downtown core after receiving a report of a break and enter in progress”.  They then arrested 49 year old Scott MacDonald of no fixed address for “offences of Break and Enter, Possession of a weapon, Possession of Break and Enter tools and failing to comply with Probation”.  He is being “held in custody and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice for a bail hearing on Monday the 20th day of August 2018.”

You have to give the Police high marks for transparency although their conformance with privacy constraints means locations are not specific and few names are provided.

Too bad we don’t have civi police out there catching the “many Cobourgians” who go thru town stop signs.
Police could make their monthly budget on Westwood and the King & Burnham corner.

The ‘Tiered Policing’ initiative, made possible by Bill 175 and announced by Cobourg Police Services last spring, is now in jeopardy.
The bill defined police duties that must be performed by sworn, highly paid officers only and would help municipalities cut the ever-growing cost of policing by enabling communities to ‘civilianize’ certain tasks performed by police.
Bill 175 is now in limbo with its coming into force cancelled as one of the first acts of the new Ford government.
The CTA has identified policing costs as the elephant in the budget room and is no doubt concerned about the delay and possible redrafting of Bill 175.

And what is happening to the M-HEART – Mental Health Engagement and Response Team – in which the Cobourg Police Department is a partner?
The Ontario Minister of Health just announced a $335 million cut in planned mental health spending this year.

Oops here is the answer.
“The Ontario government says it will invest part of the money it has earmarked for mental health care into training police and first responders on how to manage interactions with people dealing with mental health issues and addictions.” CBC

Geez Walter,
Your pal wallY might call you a doom and gloomer, moner and groaner if you keep up all this negative talk about anything you can even remotely tie to the CTA. You’ve got Doug Ford into the mix (who just happened to win an overwhelming majority), how much longer before you work Donald trump in? Vladimir Putin? Saddam Hussein? Adolf Hitler?

Heavens to Betsy, Mystery Poster!
Of course, cuts in provincial spending – whoever the Premier may be – will impact us local taxpayers.
And since you cannot deal with facts, you have to resort to insults all the while hiding in anonymity. A profile in courage!
And do look up Godwin’s Law.

No mention of a 911 call coming in and NO COP came for the call ! Dispatch said they were all busy ! Not even a call back to see if the woman was ok. I find this despicable

I get the impression from news clips on TV that whenever something big and exciting happens, every unit for miles around shows up, whether they could possibly be of any additional assistance or not. Cop cars and uniforms by the dozens all crowded around. No one wants to remain free to be available for the boring stuff.

Interesting they didn’t mention fsiling to respind to a 911 call for assistance and have blocked certain media from asking important questions. So much fir transparency.
