DBIA announces 2019 Attractions

The new DBIA Events & Communications Coordinator Jenna Leslie has now announced the 2019 Downtown events with a few changes.  Gone is the Busker Festival on the second Saturday in June but in its place is “Saturdays on Second Street” for four Saturdays in June. The Art Walk in August returns with the same format but loses the accompanying Pub crawl.  In its place is a new OctoBEER pub crawl in October.  Also returning are favourites including the February Pub Crawl (I guess we like our beer!), the Girls Night Out in May, the Food and Music Festival the weekend after the Waterfront Festival, the Sidewalk Sale on the August long weekend, the Harvest Festival late September and in November, a one day Christmas event when the Town turns on the Christmas lights.

They don’t list the Santa parade – this is traditionally jointly organized by the Lions and the DBIA but I guess a Parade is not the same as the other events. And of course the Canada Day parade is also separate.

Anyway, here are the events – somewhat summarized from the full announcement which you can get from the Link below.

It’s good to see that one of my concerns when I was a downtown merchant has been addressed, at least to degree. For years I tried to change the mindset of a few major events focused generally in the summertime each year to a more diverse list of smaller and more frequent events throughout the whole year. The main reason was weather issues that could wipe out any one or more events, leaving little to show for the considerable effort and expense each brings with it. Another issue was that if people who we were trying to attract to the downtown had conflicting personal plans for one or more of those few dates, which is highly likely in the summertime anyway, our event would be the discarded one. Again, a bad outcome almost sure to repeat itself again and again. But, with efforts and dollars spread out over numerous weekly events for much of the year, the percentage of patron attendance issues would be reduced over the year and have a far more positive customer attraction and experience outcome, as well as a far better return on the efforts and dollars being expended on them. Too bad it’s taken this long but Good for the DBIA executive in finally understanding and acting on that reality.
