A Couple of Interesting Developments

There was a public meeting last Tuesday to get input on Public thoughts on a development at 900 Division street (which also uses address 9 Elgin Street east) and separately, at the next Council meeting on September 9, Trinity Development Group who manage the Northumberland Mall property are asking for rezoning for part of their land. The 900 Division Street rezoning was approved and will be confirmed at the September 9 meeting but the change at Northumberland Mall will require a public meeting – it’s currently at an early stage.  The 900 Division street  re-zoning was to allow the conversion of an existing building on the corner property into a Medical Clinic to provide space for up to eight doctors.  Existing zoning only allows three.  The changes are otherwise minimal – mostly just re-arranged parking to meet requirements.  There was no objection from the Public – in fact not even a comment.  I understand that the doctors accommodated are moving from somewhere else – but where from was not disclosed.

Northumberland Mall property

Proposed is a new 929 m2 single storey freestanding building with 6 units: one financial, 4 retail and one restaurant with drive through.  All access would be from the parking lot; no additional access from Egin Street is proposed.  It would necessarily reduce the total amount of parking available for the Mall. 

There is no word on any changes to the Mall itself. [Update:  At the Council meeting on 9 September 2019, Director of Planning Glenn McGlashon said that up till now, Mall management had not submitted anything related to changes at the mall itself.]

Wondering if developing much needed residential apartments or condos over the mall has been considered. Great revenue generator for the mall as well.

I have heard of 2 of the planned businesses.
– Starbucks (probably the drive-thru restaurant)

finally a new Bank we can get to and hopefully will have lots of Parking rather than circling the old King st Circuit looking for a space

Not necessarily a bank. Could well be an investment firm or something along those lines similar to Assante on Third St.

Yep. The town does not allow banks outside of downtown, the one exception being Scotiabank the mall. They do it as a way to prop up the downtown and frankly I’m ok with.

If the mall ends up biting the dust it would be interesting to see what would happen with the bank branch in there.

I believe the doctors involved are currently operating out of the Pink Palace on King St.

I assume you’re referring to the doctors out of 316 King Street East (building across from the CCI high school) which is pretty much empty since the drug store left and so did everything else. It would be nice to not have to pay $4.00 for parking and much easier to get into and out of the building as well since the doctor’s office on the second floor. Maybe they can turn it into apartments. Three floor building going to waste.

Well there’s nothing much left in 316 King Street East. It would be nice to have it converted to apartments. Lots of parking and three floors. Lifelabs left a few years ago, Optometrists, pharmacy and nothing thrives. People also don’t want to pay $4 for parking at 316 King Street East every time they go there.
