Covid-19 Update – January 2022

Although Ontario is scheduled to lift some restrictions at the end of the month, by no means are we out of the woods.  The good news is that we are past the peak that occurred around the end of December; the bad news is that cases have plateaued at a high rate – for Northumberland that’s around an average of 30 new cases per day (see graph below).  Worse, that’s an underestimate – the real number is higher.  That’s because it only measures the results of PCR testing.  Many Omicron cases do not get recorded in official figures.  Because of this, the HKPR DHU Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bocking, says that we should watch other indicators like ICU admissions, outbreaks and hospitalization.

Another measure that has recently got some attention is to inspect sewage!  With appropriate equipment, one can see how much virus is in the community – although there is a 7 day lag in getting results. This works well in major Towns or cities but not so well in rural areas where many people use septics. However, last Fall Cobourg started doing these tests and currently these results also point to a plateau – that is, neither going up nor down.

But PCR Tests do give some idea of what’s happening – this graph is for just Northumberland.

New cases 27 Jan 2022
New cases 27 Jan 2022

Let’s look at hospitalization – see graph below for complete HKPR district (not just Northumberland).

Hospitalization

One piece of good news is that outbreaks are trending down.  On 14 January, there were 17 outbreaks in Northumberland but now there are 9.  You can see a full list of outbreaks here.

Generally, this District has fewer cases than the average for Ontario.  Further, it continues to be true that the risk of being hospitalized is much higher if you are not vaccinated.  And the number vaccinated in the District is high: 87.0% of adults 18 and over have had 2 doses and 53.6% of adults 18 and over have had 3 doses.  You can get doses statistics for the District here.

Currently, the Province is planning to ease restrictions on Jan 31.  It’s not known if the plateau is enough to allow this since although cases are down, they are still high compared to late 2021.  Details are on this page.

So 3 weeks of maskless protesters congregating in tight groups on Wellington Street.. Numerous others coming in from outside jurisdictions in Ontario and Quebec.
Where are the all the COVID 19 cases. This should be a super spreader event. I heard nothing from Ottawa Health.

This maybe the biggest science experiment to show we dont need mask mandates???

Looks like Trucker protest may have had an impact on the provincial leaders.
Unfortunately, in Ottawa we have two immovable forces- people who want an end to mandates and justin trudeau who wants more mandates.

Canadians maybe be approving of of the use of the Emergencies Measures act right now, but I believe we’ll regretting its use a year from now

Ireland to drop almost all COVID restrictions | Edmonton Sun DUBLIN — Ireland is to scrap almost all its COVID-19 restrictions on Saturday after coming though the storm of the Omicron variant that led to a massive surge in infections, Prime Minister Micheal Martin said in a national address.

Nation after developed nation are tossing lockdowns and mandates into the dustbin of history. This form of coercive oppression has caused enormous damage to our society in so many ways and all we got in return is a lousy 0.2% return on our obedience to state oppression.

Over the past 10 days the people of Canada have broken the bubble of oppression. The Freedom Convoy has inspired Canadians with hope and lots and lots of wonderful montages with music and tons of satiric memes. The govt has inspired nothing for years. The govt has only delivered oppression.

Finnish government to remove COVID-19 restrictions (yahoo.com) HELSINKI (Reuters) – Finland will begin lifting restrictions put in place to check the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, with the aim of removing all curbs at the beginning of March, Prime Minister Sanna Marin told reporters on Wednesday.

Time for our govt sycophants to stop fear-mongering, to flatten the curve on the rise of mental health issues in our young and to open the cages around our small business entrepreneurs.

Wokeness has blinded too many, including our glorious leader who is tone deaf to the people’s desire to live free.

Time to Accept Covid and Move On? (monmouth.edu) “Fully 7 in 10 Americans (70%) agree with the sentiment that “it’s time we accept that Covid is here to stay and we just need to get on with our lives” – including 78% of those who report having gotten Covid and 65% of those who say they have not been infected.”

The truckers represent the growing majorities in many countries who believe that lockdowns (coercive) and mandates (coercive) are useless and futile and reject govts that continue to oppress their citizens with this needless coercive power. The govt has no science whatsoever to support all the mandates and lockdowns. More and more evidence of increasing mental health in our youth fail to move govt sycophants. And all of the economic damage done by lockdowns and mandates, that have proven to be only 0.2% effective, can be laid at the feet of proselytizing sycophants.

Lockdowns in the U.S. and Europe had little or no impact in reducing deaths from COVID-19, according to a new analysis by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.
The lockdowns during the early phase of the pandemic in 2020 reduced COVID-19 mortality by about 0.2%, said the broad review of multiple scientific studies.

We find no evidence that lockdowns, school closures, border closures, and limiting gatherings have had a noticeable effect on COVID-19 mortality,” the researchers wrote.

Lockdowns had little or no impact on COVID-19 deaths, new study shows – Washington Times

So why do we want to continue to oppress ourselves so much that it has already caused an increase in serious mental health problems in our young? The govt is doing more harm than good. And the majority want the state oppression lifted. Look at all that 2yr pain in our society and for what? a measly 0.2% savings. So take a lesson Mr Oliver and join the majority of Canadians who want the oppression lifted and and let our small business entrepreneurs flourish again.

The science is on the side of the majority.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cavalierly dismissed the truckers as a “fringe minority”. Really, this from a Prime Minister of a minority govt. When his vanity led him into another election he received even fewer votes. Justin Trudeau has no mandate for anything from the Canadian people. The vast majority of voting Canadians did not vote for him. He is the fringe minority, but his bloated vanity thinks otherwise. He gets to govern by default, not by mandate.

The truckers have been successful in raising awareness and the proof is in the new Angus poll. “A majority of Canadians now say it is time to end COVID restrictions, according to an Angus Reid poll, a sharp increase from when the same question was asked in early January.”

Interesting news. Not necessarily relevant to Canada because of the differences in our respective health care systems, how they are financed and our decentralized form of government and the subsequent limited authority our Frederal government has to impose regulations and mandates concerning COVID. Because of the UKs’centralized form of authority it was very effective at controlling the virus at first but then opened up too extensively and too quickly.

As for the truck drivers what I don’t get is that the Americans have made it mandatory for the drivers to be vaccinated before entering the US. This makes their objection to the Canadian mandate moot.

Last October 29, at 5:06pm, the Liberal Party of Canada tweeted:

“Exciting news! Q3 of 2021 is officially the strongest fundraising quarter in the history of our party. Thank you for helping Liberal teams across the country run successful campaigns to keep Canada moving forward, for everyone. THANK YOU The strongest fundraising quarter in the history of the Liberal Party of CANADA! 57,146 Canadians chipped in more than 7.64 million.”
It received a mere 70 retweets (probably only by the Laurentian elite.) and only 325 likes. It took three months for the Liberals to obtain 7.64 million. Not much energy and enthusiasm there.

Compare to the Freedom Convoy, which raised $8.5 million and counting in only 10 days. What a measure of enthusiastic support! The govt inspires nothing but more mandates and lockdowns in the darkest months of winter. Govt policy is causing widespread mental health issues in our teen population.

Here is an idea. THE PEOPLE in many countries, Denmark included, have loudly denounced the MANDATES massively. There are many vids showing this. It is happening in spite of the ruling class and their puppet media covering it up. This single-minded approach to vaccinate vaccinate vaccinate is causing great harm, mental health issues with teens has soared, and you don’t address that do you?. Let’s stop the callous coercion of citizens and focus intensely on therapeutics to treat covid patients and save their lives. Obviously two shots with a booster does not protect against against covid. At best all it does is “reduce risk”. Throw in therapeutics and more lives will be saved and these cruel lockdowns and mandates that are damaging the mental health of our teens will enjoy the freedom they so richly deserve. So how about that Mr Oliver?

And by the way the majority of Canadians want the oppression lifted. How about it Mr Oliver, will you join with the majority of Canadians and denounce the use of coercive force against Canadians?

So the leader of our minority govt just announced that he tested positive for the covid-19 virus. This, in spite of the fact that he has received two full vaccinations and a booster last Jan 4. He said he “feels fine” and recommended that all Canadians “get vaccinated and get boosted.” However, he continues to coerce hard-working truckers because he believes they have little value to society at large. They are just a “fringe minority” so we don’t have to consider their notions about anything. They are the unacceptable. Mr Oliver slanders the truckers as anti-vaxxers which is a gross misrepresentation. They are anti-mandate, not anti-vax. They have said so many times, but, sadly, there are blockheads who refuse that truth.

Wally Keeler

MANDATE, according to Merriam-Webster, is “an official order to do something”.

Thou shalt take the jab or suffer serious consequences, and we mean serious.

Your body autonomy doesn’t matter.

My body my choice is a rejected notion.

No religious exemption.

No conscientious objection.

Your possible allergy is of no concern.

Read the 53-page Pfizer report, especially page 46 containing the 3-line summary:

• Reduction in the risk of confirmed COVID-19 occurring at least 7 days after Dose 2
• Reduction in the risk of confirmed COVID-19 after Dose 1 and before Dose 2
• Reduction in the risk of confirmed severe COVID-19 any time after Dose 1

There is zero mention that the vaccine recipients cannot spread the virus to others. The same applies to the Moderna vaccine if you care to read their summary.

All the vaccine does is reduce risk. It does not prevent a vaccinated person from infecting others. Vaccinated truckers are as likely to spread the virus to others as the unvaccinated. So why the discrimination? Why not follow the science?

The Pfizer document, under the section on Unknown Benefits/Date Gaps, there was insufficient info to make any solid affirmation claims about the following:

  1. Vaccine Duration of protection
  2. Vaccine Efficacy with immunosuppressed populations
  3. Vaccine Effectiveness in individuals previously infected with SARS-CoV-2
  4. Vaccine Effectiveness in pediatric populations
  5. Vaccine effectiveness against asymptomatic infection
  6. Vaccine effectiveness against long-term effects of COVID-19 disease
  7. Vaccine effectiveness against mortality
  8. Vaccine effectiveness against transmission of SARS-CoV-2

Rachel Maddow, of MSNBC news, broadcast to millions of people that the vaccine will “STOP” the spread of the virus. She lied. She spread misinformation.

So I ask again, what is this bloated, paranoid fear that unvaccinated truckers are an infectious threat to the nation, that they are so dangerous and threatening that they must be jabbed by coercion?

Show me the science.

There is a form of Lysenkoism concerning this vaccine. And individuals like Mr Oliver and his ilk are spreading their infectious paranoia to others.

Mr Oliver does not follow the science, only alarmist headlines from a seriously compromised mainstream media. Mr Oliver is seriously spreading harmful misinformation. I advise that his comments be disregarded.

Keith Oliver

There are those who believe that efforts by governments to control and defeat the Covid virus have not only failed but have caused great harm to the economy.

The evidence proves just the opposite. It is the disbelievers, the anti-vax minority, that make up more than 75% of those being admitted to hospitals, ICU wards and those dyiing (now at the rate of 50 deaths a day in Ontario), that represent failure and are responsible for the subsequent damage to both the local and national economy.

As far as the failure of politicians “to do the right thing”, who instead follow their self-serving, missguided political instincts, Jason Kenny is a prime example. Alberta, because of its’ high infection rate, is experiencing major economic disruption and is now sending COVID patients to the US for trearment.

The failure is not that of government but that of citizens who failed to mask and distance when they should have (the extreme was church groups who believed their fate was in the hands of God), and the missinformed who systematically ignore the advice of experts. Instead they believe in an absolute personal freedom that gives them the right to infect others.

Pete M

Really Keith. You presents stats without any context.
50 deaths a day?
I went to the ontario public health page.
This is how they label COVID deaths:

COVID-19 daily death counts and rates in Ontario
December 28, 2021 to January 27, 2022
This epidemic (epi) curve shows the progression of COVID-19 deaths over time. Deaths include the number of people with a confirmed case of COVID-19 who have died.

Please note the last sentence:” deaths include number of people with confirmed case”

The public needs to know how many of those deaths are because of Covid and how many died with Covid, where Covid was not the cause of death.

Even the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Province has said he needs to review death certificates to determine the true numbers of covid deaths due to covid and with covid.

We masked, we social distanced, we vaccinated not once, not twice but 3 times. The virus marched on.
It morphed throughout the world and found a way to break thru vaccine wall.

Hell, it found its way into the Prime Minister’ house not once, but twice. It even drove the Prime Minister into hiding.

Over the last few days we have seen the appearance of white flags from various public health officials, who admit Covid is here to stay.
They state we are going to have to learn to live with it.

To me it sounds like government admission our quivers are empty

Appreciate this opportunity to correct my statistic re number of deaths a day in Ontario from Covid.

As reported on page two of Saturday, Jan 29 edition of Globe+Mail, the average daily death rate from Covid in Ontario over lasr week is 61.3 a day not the 50 I stated.

Imagine if one of those was someone you really cared for. As Stalin once said, “… the death of one man is a tragedy … the death of a thousand statistics!”

Regards uncertainty on the part of experts. The fact that COVID is new, mutates, is deadly, and easily spread is a given. It is only two years old and there is much detail to be learned. Everyone admits that, especially the scientists.

In the meantime and untill more is known: stop spreading miss-information; beware of absolute freedom; get the vaccine; wear a mask; distance; be especially careful in groups; hope for the best … and think about what Stalin said.

I don’t know of anyone in my life who had ever advocated “absolute freedom

You are employing the practice, described by Merriam Webster, “of drawing a red herring across a trail to confuse hunting dogs: something that distracts attention from the real issue.”

You are employing a strawperson argument, described by Merriam Webster, as “a weak or imaginary opposition (such as an argument or adversary) set up only to be easily confuted”

This past week I have witnessed extraordinarily toxic slanders directed against the Freedom Convoy.

The PM informed his sycophants and minions that it was merely a fringe minority holding unacceptable viewpoints. That was the dog whistle that signaled the beginning of a torrent of toxic rhetoric against fellow Canadians who hold unacceptable views. The Canadian deplorables.

So then the leader of the NDP smears the convoy by asserting “a convoy led by those that claim the superiority of the white bloodline and equate Islam to a disease.”

Truckers couldn’t be more working class; the NDP used to embrace those kind of people. What a betrayal!

This is followed with CBC (state tv)(propaganda) and its pundits, influencers, bringing up the litany of ad hominem:
misogynists, bigots, racists, white supremacists, white nationalists, domestic terrorists, insurrectionists, even floating the idea of Russian collusion, etc, etc, ad nauseum. Talk about misinformation!

The poison cherry on top was earned by the so called working class Toronto Star when it posted a cartoon of a truck convoy with the word “fascism” fixed to the side of each truck. Talk about malicious misinformation!

The convoy leadership several hours ago announced that the Toronto Star will be excluded from their press conferences.

It isn’t the GOV that is spreading the virus it is people. This is, and has been, a public health problem, aided and abetted by a people problem. These people must accept accountability for what they did, what they do and the consequences of those actions. The fact that people are dying, regardless of the number of deaths, is unacceptable, as is the trivializing of this pandemic, with comparisons to the flu. Upwards to 8K people die of the flu, 4x that many have died of Covid in Canada and we ain’t done yet. Many of these Covid related deaths are directly related to the unnecessary, selfish risk taking by people, not GOV.

If two years of our intense experience with the COVID-19 pandemic has given us anything of lasting value, it has been a crash course in how a crisis can provoke irrational behaviour. Examples are a growth in a distrust of government as well as the timely advice from those who have been given positions of authority by government because of their expertise and accumulated knowledge.

The truckers’ demonstration in Ottawa this weekend: the belief that in any community of people (including that of a marriage or partnership) there is any such thing as ABSOLUTE freedom; the belief in miss-information because it is spread unchallenged through the wonderland of social media; the failure to understand and accept the fact that it is in the nature of a virus to mutate and that Omicron will most likely not be the last variant.

It boggles the mind that so many (the critical last holdouts) will not take a vaccine (which has proven so successful in so many instances) and refuse to wear a mask. They seem to forget that the success of Canada is based on a belief in “peace, order and good government”.

That is a another silly presumption you have about me. Every government should be accountable to the people. The people should always question authority, and todo so rigorously, especially when the mainstream media fails to do so.

In 1973 they began intercepting my private first class mail. I set up a sting op and caught them red-handed. The Security Service of the RCMP contacted my friends to interrogate them about my loyalty to Canada. No only did they intercept my mail, they withheld it and they published the content. All of that was against the law.

My sting op worked. I informed my MP who sent letters of inquiry to the Solicitor-General, Warren Allmand, and to the Post-Master General, Andre Ouellette. Mr Allmand sent a letter to my MP saying “I have been assured by the RCMP that it is not their practice to intercept the private mail of anyone.” This was found to be a lie when Operation Cathedral was their practice. The Speaker of the House, James Jerome, held the government in contempt of Parliament for lying to an MP. The next two and half days the issue was debated.

At that time, my phone had been wiretapped without a warrant. The SS of the RCMP went to my employer and told him they suspected I was a subversive. I was laid off. They did the same with my landlord, who didn’t want a subversive on their property. So I move to a new flat and it was set on fire in an arson attack.

What form of government do I want? I want “good government” as our Charter espouses. We don’t have good gov’t. Actually we have very bad gov’t.

Take serious note: the current gov’t is racist, led by racists (Libs, NDP). That’s almost all they talk about. Their vocabulary is filled with the following talking points: misogynist, fascist, domestic terrorism, white supremacists, white nationalists, racists, Islamophobes, homophobes, etc etc etc ad nauseum. They have no solution other than to smear the good working class people of Canada who are exercising their Charter Rights.

The current gov’t disgusts me. It should be overthrown. By election. The people of Canada have realized what a bald-faced smear artist the PM and his sycophants are and you can bet your booties that Justin will see votes declining for him on his third attempt of electoral failure.

For those looking for signs of a possible return to normal:

“Most coronavirus restrictions including mandatory face masks were lifted in England on Thursday after Britain’s government said its vaccine booster rollout successfully reduced serious illness and COVID-19 hospitalizations.

From Thursday, face coverings are no longer required by law anywhere in England, and a legal requirement for COVID passes for entry into nightclubs and other large venues has been scrapped…”

A return to normal….This is welcome news for all of us….A century ago, after WW1 and the subsequent Spanish Flu pandemic, Warren Harding became President of the US running a campaign called ‘The Return to Normalcy’.
The public responded, sweeping him into office with one of the largest margins of popular vote ever recorded. (various scandals followed; he died 2 years later while in office and subsequent Harvard historians 2 decades later marked him as the worst President ever…) Maybe that was his version of a political, ‘return to normalcy’??
Lets see which of our cast-of-candidates have the courage to declare a possible ‘Return to Normalcy’ in our upcoming year of Provincial and Municipal elections…..

I know your smart enough to realize municipal elections are about who has the most friends and connections especially in a town our size and based on our format of not having a ward system. What has happened during this term will not determine who gets re-elected. Who has the most friends and connections with large organizations within the town will. Unfortunate yes.

Probably Rotary.

Fantastic organizers but their constant need for recognition and praise is weird.

I can understand the intense exhaustion and frustration many people are experiencing as the pandemic drags on. I feel the same. And the end to health restrictions in U.K. is not a good example to us. The opinion of our recent visitor from U.K., who works in health care, has confirmed that for me. National loosening of public health restrictions is not seen as wise by every level of government in U.K. either. The city of London still supports masking on public transit because local health officials deem the spread of Omicron a risk to vulnerable people who travel by bus and train. Wishful thinking and denial and outrage about loss of personal “freedom” for the unvaccinated are not going to end this pandemic. The efforts which will end this pandemic are maintaining public health guidelines such as masking indoors, getting more Canadians vaccinated and sharing vaccines with countries in the Global South in a timely manner so new variants have little chance to develop.

As of Sat. Jan 29, Trudeau has been moved to a secret location for protection.

Fortunately for Trudeau, he has a large selection of costumes and disguises to ensure his safety.

So isolation doesnt really mean isolation. You can travel with your entourage and still isolate.

Recall that England’s initial response to Covid, from a public policy perspective, was toward ‘herd’ immunity. Like Sweden, they paid a dear price in number of deaths and near NHS breakdown. The other countries in the UK (Wales, Scotland, NIreland) are less enthusiastic and exhibiting more controlled response from a public policy and public health perspective.

100% focus on vaccines, and virtually nothing for therapeutics. So much for political leadership.

Do your research, Wally. If you’re not inclined to look for the truth, I am happy to provide links to exactly how much $$$ the Canadian Government has allocated to covid therapeutics, thus far. There’s been a primary focus on vaccines, of course, but claiming that is ALL the Trudeau Government is focused on, is patently absurd and dishonest.
