HKPR DHU Provides Video Explaining Covid Statistics

Many Canadians have trouble understanding some of the statistics available on hospitalization of people with Covid-19. One source of confusion is that the number of vaccinated people in Hospital is higher than the number not vaccinated. Without thinking it through, this appears to mean that vaccination does not help but in fact, the reverse is true. But our local District Health Unit (Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge DHU) has a responsibility to educate so they are promoting a video produced by the Eastern Ontario DHU which explains this (see below). Unfortunately, anti-Vaxers incorrectly take this statistic as evidence to support their objection – they are effectively saying that they do not believe medical experts. If they act on their belief, they are also more likely to die from the virus.

Statistics and what helps fight the pandemic are not matters of opinion – they are facts.  The recent protest by truckers is about whether individuals should be forced to take certain measures but the facts are not up for debate – although they seem to need a lot of explaining.

Here is the video – quite short and quite clear.

A big thank you to the Eastern Ontario District Health Unit. https://eohu.ca/en

Effective 7 February, comments have been disabled on this page because the discussion has turned to the Trucker protest which is not what this post is about.  It’s about the need to educate people on what statistics mean for the pandemic and vaccinations.

Some more ‘fascists’ arrived by horseback to support the convoy in Ottawa. https://youtu.be/vH8DxwbpkkM

The truck convoy didn’t accomplish a damned thing, other than to disrupt an otherwise peaceful city for days on end, and to garner the support of some of the worst Republican politicians, and the whole crew at Fox News.

And now the Mayor of Ottawa has declared a state of emergency and, tomorrow, streets will still be closed and traffic disrupted, in Toronto.

The truck convoy didn’t accomplish a damned thing

Oh but it did. In sub zero temperatures 10s of thousands of people swarmed the bridges of the nation with love and hand-made signs and HOPE. Suddenly Canadians had something to feel proud. They have inspired folk music songs to illustrate the many vids they have produced. They aroused and inspired so many Canadians with the siren song FREEDOM! I heard children chanting freedom. When have we ever heard that word chanted on the streets of Canada. Likely not since the days preceding WW2.

The truckers have inspired hope, something that the federal parties have failed to deliver.

From the dear leader of the New Democrats we get this inspiring message, a convoy led by those that claim the superiority of the white race bloodline and equate Islam to a disease.” This inspires nothing but division and gloom.

The same gloomy doom with the Leader of the Liberals, Tweedledumb, Justin Trudeau.

Both leaders promise more oppression, not hope. Both leaders are more concerned about witch-hunting, than to prevent any further deterioration of the mental health of our youth.

I stand with the truckers, not the freedomphobes.

I stand with those who don’t fly the Canadian flag upside down while p*ssing in the streets and stockpiling gasoline on quiet residential streets and honking their horns all through the night. And many of them are going to require lawyers when this is over and it’s not because they’re out there sharing or spreading love. Trump loves ’em though. He put out a special tribute to them. He insulted Trudeau and said he has destroyed Canada. So, Wally, you’re in good company.

Assuming death counts are not inflated, 6M/7.5B = 1 in 1250. Mostly Elderly, overweight, or other co-morbidities. Vaccines likely provide more benefit than risk, but they remain a great experiment in extraordinary times. Never lose sight of those foundational truths. “Science” is now a joke punch-line, or snarky quip.

I know the pandemic is over when tribes form and cast aspersions. Rolex-loving Jagmeet Singh no longer represents Canadian workers, and when Justin tried to bash truckers to distract from his own failures, it backfired. I wish Brian Peckford success in his lawsuit to uphold our Charter of Rights and freedoms.

Pete M

Canadians are now in three “tribal” groups. Those who are vaxed but still need mandates as an assurance in order to live their lives.
There are those who are vaxed and understand the vaccine reduces your chances of death and hospitalization, but it will not stop Covid. They understand that the current mandates do little to stop the spread of Omicron. Their trust in the vaccine and new therapeutics allows them to say, end mandates, I m ready to live my life
Then their are those who say no to the vaccines and no to mandates. For some they support the vaccine but wont do it because it was govt mandated. For others it is religious. For others it is because they fear the unknown long term effects of an experimental vaccine.

This tribalism will have long term impacts on Canadians and how we view each other.

There will be those who will never be able to give up masks and the 6 ft rule, after the mandates are lifted. They will look down on those who dont mask and blame them for covid never being eradicated.

There will be those anti mandate / anti vaxxers that will mock and harass those permanent maskers.

Canadians become a divided not because of Covid but because of how we view each others response to COVID.

It can already be seen on this blog

I think you pretty much called it. Only time will help reduce divisiveness and only if we dont face waves of new variants. Im optimistic for what I hope are positive outcomes such as a better health care system, vaccine development and supply in our own Country and an overhaul on Long term care facilities.

At the bottom of these comments SW Buyer provides some Ontario statistics including 78 deaths per 100,000. A quick search reveled over 140 deaths per 100,000 due to heart disease and stroke. Also this:
Besides causing considerable difficulties for patients and affecting quality of life, heart disease and stroke have a significant economic cost. Not only do heart disease and stroke affect the health system, they also affect the overall economy through missed work and lower productivity.

If you support restriction for Covid-19 do you also support restrictions for heart disease and stroke? Limiting alcohol consumption, requiring people to get more exercise, restricting sales of unhealthy foods could be done. Should we, to reduce the strain on the health care system? Personally, I like potato chips and having a drink with a friend or customer (responsibly walking home after). The restrictions in place to reduce Covid-19 make it more difficult to do the things necessary to reduce other risks and to enjoy life. What would Stephen Leacock say? Perhaps:
“In other words, the outlook is bad. As I see it, there is nothing for it but to enjoy ourselves while we can. The wise man will go out, while it is still possible, and get some pulp and a pint of gasoline and a chunk of coal and have a big time.”

So, probably the top medical journal,”The Lancet”, reported in January on a new British study that concluded the impact of vaccination on community transmission “appeared to be not significantly different from the impact among unvaccinated people.” Other international studies have reached the same conclusion.

Ontario’s experience with the Omicron virus certainly supports that point. While the rate of serious illness is higher among the unvaccinated, the vaccinated are significantly affected too. In early January, vaccinated people had a COVID case rate of a little over 100 people for every 100,000. Interestingly, both partially vaccinated and unvaccinated people had a rate of about 80 people per 100,000. Now, all three have declined sharply and there is little difference in the case rate between the vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Good to know….Finally. Thank you.

The vax manufacturers have never said that the vax prevents/reduces transmission. They have also never said that the vax provides immunity. They did claim that the vax helps reduce the severity of the illness if you get infected.
So now, a top medical authority is confirming this, contrary to the widely believed myths,

The truth is finally coming to the public’s attention. Perhaps the public will also begin to ask if their governments, public health services and the media haven’t been shading the truth a bit, and why

Canada needs to adopt a ‘more sustainable’ approach to COVID-19, Tam says (msn.com)
“all existing public health policies, including provincial vaccine passports, need to be “re-examined” in the coming weeks — because it’s clear now that Canada and the rest of the world will be grappling with this virus for months or years to come.”

So lets get on with increasing the capacity of IC Units, Training of staff, Also research and development of therapeutics. Stop damaging the economy with lockdowns and mandates. Stop damaging the mental health of youth with lockdowns and mandates.

Stop the smearing of fine hard-working Canadians by political progressives, the toxic invective of the black face racist, Justin Trudeau and racist Jagmeet Singh.

Thanks a lot John for sending on this presentation. What’s the old saw – figures never lie, but liars figure. Ambiguity is not a strong suit for many, many of the unvaxxed; further, for those on the contrarian side, they like to use the these ambiguities to promote outright falsehoods. So debate with contrarian &/or unvaxxed folks is pointless. Any way you state the case it comes across as preachy/officious. So where are we: approx 156/day deaths in Canada (annualized +56000 if the current rate is maintained); approx 2300/day deaths in USA (annualized +800000 if the current rate is maintained); in either hospitals or ICU the majority as a % of population are far and away (60%-90% depending on your expert source) the unvaxxed; %s of who lives and who dies is apparently difficult to garner. So one is left with probabilities. Intuitively I believe that the rate of recovery (life) from hospitalization & ICU for sick but fully vaxxed people is much greater than for unvaxxed people.

Wally Keeler
Reply to  Gerinator

Those who are vaxxed are fully capable of transmitting the virus to others. Pfizer and Moderna never made any claims to prevent transmissibility. Vaxxed truckers are as likely as unvaxxed truckers to transmit the virus.

The truckers crossed that border for two years, times when there was no vaccines, putting their health and lives on the line to bring food to your table. And in return, we shoved a mandate down their throats for the “common good.” Talk about progressive ingrates! So the truckers protest this coercion and political progressives meet them with smears
Jan 6 insurrectionists,
white nationalists,
white supremacists,
transphobes,
extremists,
domestic terrorists,
racists,
homophobes,

Canada has a serious need to immediately expand the capacity of our ICU spaces, to be able to tend to the victims of future pandemics, whether organic, human-made, or variants.

Canada has a serious need to invest in therapeutics to treat the victims of future viruses. Why should we remain unprepared for the inevitable?

We prepare for 100-year events regarding flooding. Why should we not prepare for the next 100-year event now?

Lift the lockdowns and mandates now! Divert your attention and treasure to the above positive suggestions

Agree with first 3 paragraphs. This pandemic and the SARS pandemic (affecting +2 dozen countries) should have taught us our lessons. I guess we don’t retain critical, but lagged, information very well. Lessons learned analysis apparently isn’t top of mind for those who manage the various Fed/Pro/Muni budgets. Covid ripped (& continues) the shroud of universal health care WITHOUT maintaining the necessary funding/expertise/physical sites & equipment to deal with speed inevitable scenarios like a pandemic.
With respect to the last para I totally disagree. Constraints can’t be lifted until people demonstrate a willingness to cooperate with a general ethos that we are our brothers keeper. Keep them safe and well as much as possible. Once that is achieved then we should open it up. And yes I’ve had the kool-aid but not the bleach!

Really?! The oppression of Canadians must continue until they get it thru their heads to obey the “general ethos”? That is an unacceptable viewpoint. “The recent Angus Reid poll clearly … blah blah blah”. Wait a few days and there will be another poll with a different result. I believe it was two weeks ago (best guess) that a different poll indicated that 67 percent supported the restrictions, including the mandates. Since you brought up the truckers, many of us are grateful for the 90 percent who got vaccinated and boosted – NO PROBLEM. If everyone were that responsible, no mandates would be required.

Audrey,

Perhaps you could read John Anthony’s comment above.

As indicated, the vax doesn’t impart immunity and does not prevent/reduce transmission. Vaxed and non-vaxed are equally likely to be infected and transmit the virus to others.

Vax or no-vax has no impact on the requirement (or not) for mandates

The virus is here to stay but the pandemic is viewed by most as over. The people in Canada have overwhelmingly demonstrated the willingness to cooperate to their absolute detriment. Accepted needless lockdowns, accepted a curtailment to rights granted under the Charter, accepted unelected officials telling us who can and can not be in our homes and who we can visit and when, we rolled up our sleeves in record numbers – 1 & 2 & 3 times and allowed the vaccination and masking of our children. We agreed to be scanned at restaurants theatres and sporting events while our friends were not permitted to inside. We watched families ruined. We witnessed a mental health crisis. Saw local businesses shuttered as big box stores earned record profits. My friend the collective WE have done our part and more. 2-weeks to flatten the curve

I feel for those who have oversubscribed to the fear narrative pushed by Governments that had no answers and media that fed off of it – for many life will never be or feel the same. We have all paid a heavy price but its over….

“These people have decided by their choice to be ‘unvaxxed’ have overloaded the ICU unnecessarily.”

This kind of thinking reminds of the days of yore when the lepers were cast outside the city to rot and die. The callousness and cruelty of such thinking is horrific. Mother Teresa took action against such treatment of their fellow humans.

I almost died because of vaccination. When the polio vaccine came out, I was in grade 1. My mother attended to make sure the jab never touched me. It was a threat to my life. One size does not fit all. Of course, there were parents infected with fear advising their kids not to play with that unclean Wally. The stigmatization and shaming in the community dissolved in 2 or 3 months later, when other children played with me again. I was an unvaccinated child, and I can clearly see the demonization being directed towards “The Unvaccinated” by those with socialist thinking because they appeal to the group not to the individual.

When I hear about the whining of overloaded ICUs, I wonder why govts failed to fund the expansion of IC Units over the past two years? Where is the investment for this urgent need? Zero investment into therapeutics as well. Meanwhile, the govt lockdowns and mandates have severely damaged the economy, especially small business, and already caused serious mental health issues amongst our youth that may having lasting effect for some or many.

It is long past time to stand by the demands of our hard-working class truckers to rescind the mandates. Mandates are seriously harmful to the nation.

When I look at the graph, it presents a great picture of the comparative proportions of vaccinated to unvaccinated. As the camera zooms out we can clearly see how small the rectangle of concern is compared to the overall population of Ontario. Very small. So we have a disproportionate degree of social oppression to deal with the so-called fringe minority.

The two racist peas in a pod, Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh, have no solutions other than further oppression of society and the economy, and the disgusting demonization over and over, again and again, of an entire swath of good hard-working class people as:
EXTREMISTS
MISOGYNISTS
ISLAMOPHOBES
TRANSPHOBES
WHITE SUPREMACISTS

I don’t think this group represents “hard-working truckers”. Those hard-working truckers are the ones out on the roads right now – and the ones that have been tied up at the Coutts border in Alberta, trying to go about their job.
Canadian citizens have every right to protest. They do not have the right to blockade and prevent others from pursuing their daily lives. These “freedom fighters” ironically are robbing so many others of their freedom. They have exercised their right to protest. It is time for these bullies to leave.

Exactly! Yes, by medications and/or therapeutics, which I have called for, and also to expand the capacity of our IC units. This is to address future pandemics. Step out of your oldthink ways and look for better ways to deal with future pandemics rather than with cruel lockdowns and mandates which a John Hopkins study reports a whopping 0.2% effectiveness in reducing the mortality rate of Covid. Well, see Sue’s comment below – apparently that study has been discredited.
As for mandates and lockdowns – I am sure the handling of this pandemic will be studied to death in the years to come. But it just seems like common sense to avoid having unvaccinated caregivers or nurses or teachers in close contact with vulnerable people. Perhaps less of a case for truckers – but then the point is moot if the US won’t let them come over.
The recent lockdowns were not about mortality rates. They were to prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed. And with health care workers in my family, I can attest to the fact that at least some hospitals (and their staff) have been hanging by a thread. I agree that our health care system should be more forward thinking and have built in capacity for unanticipated events. But the fact is that they do not presently have that capacity. So, how else would you deal with it in the moment? Remember, it is staff we are short of, not beds, so we can’t just whip those up.

Wally Keeler

Sorry but Sue’s posting does not discredit the John Hopkin’s study. It challenges it, as it should, But the criticism is not definitive. There are lots of challenges directed towards the critic’s reports. This is how science works.

We had two years to think about expanding the capacity of our IC units, but it was never done. The same for therapeutics.

Instead we decided to main the mental health of our youth and continue to do so right now.

BTW, there are quite a few nurses in the convoy. They are concerned about the mental health of Canada’s youth. How ’bout you, and what are you doing to prevent further mental health damage?

Perhaps less of a case for truckers – but then the point is moot if the US won’t let them come over.

There is zero reason to mandate the truckers homophobes.

They extremists put food on your table for two years during the height of the pandemic with a vaccine, without lockdowns and mandates.

They Islamophobes were frontline essential so the state decided that we can risk the health and lives of the truckers white supremacists for the greater good of protecting other Canadians. And what do the truckers Jan 6 insurrectionists get in return? COERCION!

Now the truckers white bloodline are characterized by our two racist bigots, Trudeau, Singh, as the worst of the worst of human beings. What a disgraceful pity that they have sunk to such a low level.

What a New Johns Hopkins Study Has Found About the Impact of Covid-19 Lockdowns (townhall.com)
A Johns Hopkins University study found the original Covid-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020 had “little to no” effect on mortality. The meta-analysis looked at interventions such as school and business closures, travel bans, and efforts to limit gatherings to determine if there is empirical evidence to support lockdowns. According to the study, “lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality,” and in the U.S. and Europe, “only reduced COVID-19 mortality by 0.2% on average.”

ABOUT: The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center (CRC) is a continuously updated source of COVID-19 data and expert guidance. We collect and analyze the best data available on cases, deaths, tests, hospitalizations, and vaccines to help the public, policymakers, and healthcare professionals worldwide respond to the pandemic. TIME recognized the CRC as the “go-to data source” for COVID-19 and named it to the Top 100 Inventions of 2020. In 2021, Research America named the CRC a recipient of its “Meeting the moment for Public Health award.

So many down votes for a report of the facts?
Valuable information that deserves every consideration.
Is this a case of “kill the messenger”?

Exactly. I guess the facts are an unacceptable viewpoint to those who don’t have any.

I hope the John Hopkins report is challenged with rigorous astuteness and facts. Free speech is the vehicle, not cancellations, de-platforming, and all the other forms of censorship. It could very well be that other research reports will indicate a 1.6% success rate in reducing mortality.

Was the damage done to our economy and the mental health of our young people worth it?

This study was done by 3 economists, not public health experts. It has been criticized by several prominent scientists.

This was a damn good read. It raises questions. I like that. As we all know, Censorship causes more social damage than does free speech. I hope all the science on this issue is vigorously challenged regardless of precious narratives.

Raise questions.

Do you support the immediate expansion of the capacity of IC Units to deal with future pandemics?

Do you support investment into effective therapeutics to greatly reduce the damage of the next virus?

I call the for withdrawal of all lockdowns and mandates, and to discontinue this cruel practice that has deeply affected the mental health of our youth.

Right On.. Wally I have to agree.. this pandemic has/is having a devastating effect on both children and parents.. We need to get back to normal.

You will notice that the progressives and woke left are unconcerned about the mental health of youth, preferring instead to spend all their attention on witch hunting for misogynists, white supremacists, transphobes, and all the other deplorables. How pathetic. The working class have had enough of that pathology and you can see them by the tens of thousands accross the nation. When has a politician ever inspired such joy amongst so many people?

Sue,

So what if they are economists. That doesn’t mean that they can’t study data, do analysis and draw conclusions. It’s mostly math.
The NP article doesn’t get into the details so it is difficult to assess the validity/merits of either position.
Further, the prominent scientists noted in the NP article are not independent or objective. All wrote or were involved in the studies/papers that the “economists” are challenging. Their objections may be about the science, but also include a heathy dose of ego and turf protection

All that can be concluded from the NP article is that there are at least two differing opinions on the topic.

That’s right. Sue seems to think the one she chose checkmates the other. Shallow politics.

Thank you John for sharing video that provides context to the numbers.
I would also like to see with this the numbers of people who are in hospital/ICU because of Covid and those that are there because of something else but test positive for Covid, within the Health Unit Area.

I would also like to see and hear about the Numbers that have been supressed of those people that took 1 for humanity and had a bad Reaction to the Vaccine
They are now ill or seeking treatments to recover from the effects of the vaccine Some are / where hospitalized
But we have all been white washed with that same Covid brush .

People smoke cigarettes knowing they could get lung cancer and die but they refuse to get or are hesitant to get a vaccine that could save their life or their loved ones.

”The choice is clear: when it comes to the risks of a COVID-19 infection versus the risks of potential side effects – there is no comparison. Both the immediate and long-term impacts to health and wellness from contracting COVID-19 far exceed the possibility and the impact of minor side effects from one of the vaccines.”
But many people have difficulty understanding statistics and assessing risks. They also don’t think that COVID will happen to them. My daughter is a nurse. Almost every day, she hears “but I didn’t think I would get it”.

The concern is with the lack of concern for those that have a bad reaction to the Vaccine and are no longer acknowledged There is no Help after you willingly get the shot . They apparently can not reverse a bad reaction .
Its been my experience in the past when the medical profession tries out something new on a patient such as in Allergy test that a small portion or test
is performed to see if there might just be a bad reaction but not a reaction
that may be come debilitating . There are plenty of people out there that willingly got the shot suffering .

vkath:

The article you linked states: “,,,,The choice is to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or remain at high risk for contracting the illness….”

This is patently false. The drug companies do not claim that the vax prevents contracting C19 or transmitting it. They do claim that it reduces the severity of C19 if you get infected. The chance of C19 infection is the same for vaxed and non-vaxed.

The article does not define “high risk”. For most people that would be in the 60, 70, 80 percent plus range.

Further, the FNHA article presents no data or analysis to support their claims.

In my view, this article is just another piece of fear porn, perpetuating vax misinformation.

https://www.publichealthontario.ca/en/data-and-analysis/infectious-disease/covid-19-data-surveillance/covid-19-data-tool?tab=summary

The Ontario Public Health data and analysis site reports that for C19:

  • the number of case is 7,100 per 100,000 tested: 7.1%
  • the hospitalization rate is 3.8% of cases, equals 0.27% per 100,000 tested
  • the death rate is 0.078%, 78 per 100,000

For me, that is not high risk.

The mortality rate for cancer is 25%, so the odds of dying from cancer are 100 times higher than from C19.

SW:

Interesting stats.
Your math is off a bit regarding the mortality rates of cancer vs C19.

The odds of dying from cancer are significantly more than from C19. You indicated 100 times. The correct calculation is 320 times (25/0.078)

The chance of C19 infection is the same for vaxed and non-vaxed.

SW Buyer, I don’t believe that is correct. For example, for Omicron (from https://www.healthline.com/health-news/by-the-numbers-covid-19-vaccines-and-omicron):

“Current figures suggest that vaccines offer 30 to 40 percent protection against infection and around 70 percent protection against hospitalization without boosters. Newer data is confirming that a third dose increases antibody production and boosts effectiveness against infection to around 75 percent, and 88 percent for severe disease.”
