Andrew Scheer Campaigns in Cobourg

It was a big event for Conservative Party candidate Philip Lawrence – Andrew Scheer visited Cobourg.  It started with some people gathering at Philip’s office on King Street at around 6:00pm last night – then everyone walked to the Lions’ Pavilion in Victoria Park.  At around 6:30, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer arrived and gave a short speech to the crowd.  His first comment was to answer the question – “what’s it like to have a 5th child?”  He quipped “picture yourself drowning and someone tosses you a baby!”.  He then went on with campaign comments starting with “We can’t afford another 4 years of Justin Trudeau”.  He said that Justin was not as advertised.  He talked about some of his… Read complete articleAndrew Scheer Campaigns in Cobourg

People’s Party Names Federal Election Candidate

The People’s Party of Canada (PPC) was launched by Maxime Bernier on September 14, 2018 when he broke away from the Conservative Party. Elections Canada gave it official recognition on January 18, 2019. In November 2018, the PPC established an Electoral District Association (EDA) in Northumberland Peterborough-South (see report below).  At the time, Frank Vaughan, a farmer from Codrington, was appointed as Riding president and now he has announced he will be the local PPC Candidate in the Federal election in October.  Frank has issued a long rationale as to why he is running but it is clear that when he references previous government actions, he is unhappy with both Conservatives and Liberals.  The emergence of the PPC and the… Read complete articlePeople’s Party Names Federal Election Candidate

Green Party Launches Election Campaign

The federal election on October 21 is not that far away and Jeff Wheeldon, Green Party Candidate, held a “meet and greet” in Newcastle tonight.  Jeff and his team have been campaigning in Newcastle and left 1000 pamphlets and invitations to the event at nearby homes.  The Green Party feels that they are on a roll with double the number of MPs (2 up from 1) and polls showing  9.8% support, up from 3.4% in the last election – so confidence is high in making a difference.  Certainly the talk in the room was positive.  The meeting was held in the Newcastle Community Town Hall and because it was a meet and greet spread over more than 2 hours, at… Read complete articleGreen Party Launches Election Campaign

FV Pharma holds Media Event

On Friday 26 April, FV Pharma formally announced to Cobourg media that they received their Sale for Medical Purposes licence to sell cannabis under the Cannabis Act (Canada) as previously announced on this site (see link below).  Two of the founders of the parent company FSD Pharma were at the event: Zeeshan Saeed and Anthony Durkacz, as were FV Pharma CEO Dr. Sara May and MP Kim Rudd – and of course Mayor John Henderson and Councillor Adam Bureau.  Media were given a tour of the facility although not the growing area due to the need for special clothing per Health Canada regulations.  There were several areas slated to be used for expansion with one of three large areas currently in the… Read complete articleFV Pharma holds Media Event

Green Party Nominates Jeff Wheeldon

Jeff was the Green Party Candidate for the recent Provincial election and will now represent the party in the October Federal Election. Giving an example of being efficient, the Party held two AGMs and nominated their candidate all in one meeting – held at the Cobourg Community Centre.  First was the Provincial AGM with Patricia Sinnott being re-elected as President by the approx. 25 people in attendance.  Jeff  reported on the election results and blamed the relatively low vote on people who did not vote their heart but were intent on stopping either the Liberals or Doug Ford.  The meeting also elected three other executive members.  The second meeting was for the Federal Riding association who elected a new four… Read complete articleGreen Party Nominates Jeff Wheeldon

Conservatives choose Candidate for October election

An estimated 600 people showed up for the Conservative Nomination meeting held at St. Mary’s school today to hear speeches by each of the 5 candidates.  More than 50% of party members in the riding voted – some voted without hearing the candidates’ final speeches probably because they couldn’t get there in time since the parking lot was full to overflowing.  The school auditorium was also overflowing and the voting took close to the full two hours allocated.  The voting used ranked ballots which allowed voters to indicate their second, third and even fourth choices.  The vote was very close for all candidates but in the end Philip Lawrence was declared the winner after four rounds of vote counting (more… Read complete articleConservatives choose Candidate for October election

New Party established in Riding

The new People’s Party of Canada (PPC) held an inaugural meeting in Cobourg tonight to establish their Electoral District Association (EDA) for Northumberland Peterborough South.  The new Federal Party was established in September 2018 when Maxime Bernier broke away from the Conservative Party.  With almost 40,000 members across Canada but not yet an official party, it is racing against time to be set up for the next federal election in October 2019.  At the meeting, a new executive was elected, or rather nominated since their confirmation is subject to some background checking.  There were about 18 people at the meeting held in Arthur’s pub – more than expected by organizer Adam Gray from Belleville.  All ages were represented with about… Read complete articleNew Party established in Riding

Federal Government contributes to Armistice 18

MP Kim Rudd today announced that Canada’s Commemorative Partnership Program that is operated by the Veteran’s Affairs Department is granting Cobourg $10,000 for its Armistice 18 program.  Kim commended Cobourg for its efforts although she did not mention the criticism leveled at the Federal Government in a recent McLeans article (see link below).  The same article also commended Cobourg:  “Cobourg, a town of 20,000 on Lake Ontario, is currently putting the rest of the country to shame in recognizing one of the most significant events in our nation’s past. In fact, it’s doing more to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War than the entire federal government.” But Kim did manage to get the money… Read complete articleFederal Government contributes to Armistice 18

Conservative Candidate for Federal Election Campaigns in Cobourg

Last week saw Kim Rudd acclaimed as Liberal candidate with Trudeau lending support but the meet and greet by Philip Lawrence on Sunday was a much lower profile event.  For a start, the Conservatives have not yet announced a date for their nomination meeting although there are four Candidates who have said they will seek the nomination.  Philip had an open house at 99 King West (Cobourg) and had some Conservative supporters drop in for a chat.  When asked what sets him apart from the other candidates, Philip pointed to his private industry experience plus his longer recent residence in the Riding.  He’s a lawyer but works for Sun-Life – not in his own practice.  Six years ago he chose… Read complete articleConservative Candidate for Federal Election Campaigns in Cobourg

Trudeau Visits Cobourg

With no-one contesting the nomination of Kim Rudd as the Liberal Candidate for the 2019 Federal Election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to her nomination meeting to declare her the official Candidate.  No other party has yet had a nomination meeting in the Riding so Kim is off to an early start.  The meeting tonight at the LiUNA hall on Dodge Street in Cobourg was full with an estimated 350-400 people.  Most were Liberal supporters but not all; there were some Conservatives, notably Candidate Philip Lawrence with some supporters (see photo) plus some protesters (who were barely heard) and of course the National and local media.  The event was billed as open to all and starting at 6:00 p.m.  At… Read complete articleTrudeau Visits Cobourg
